As soon as I stepped into the library, I was intrigued by this mysterious man in the "Indiana Jones" hat. I found out that he was Dr. Glen Chilton, a well-known author and bird biologist.

He spoke to the Grade 6/7 classes at West Sechelt Elementary on Jan. 6. He shared some of his fascinating adventures across the world, researching his book, The Attack of the Killer Rhododendrons, which will be available in bookstores in the spring.

Last year we had the privilege to hear him share about his first book, The Curse of the Labrador Duck.

As he was telling us about his adventures, the audience was in total awe. He explained that he had a number of tremendous experiences in countries around the world such as Ethiopia, Sri Lanka, Gibraltar, New Orleans and Scotland. The way he described these destinations made me want to know more about all the different cultures.

When he travels, Chilton sometimes explores with his wife, Lisa, and other times she stays home in Australia. He told us that during these worldwide journeys without his wife, he gets lonely - not homesick, just lonely.

Chilton also explained to us that when he was just a young boy he was asked countless times what he wanted to be when he grew up. His answer was that he always wanted to play with birds. When he matured, he realized that playing with birds was actually a career known as an ornithologist.

To conclude his speech, he informed us with enthusiasm that he is looking forward to travelling abroad again while researching and advertising his books, The Attack of the Killer Rhododendrons and The Return of the Ferret Zombies.

During his educating and entertaining visit, Chilton made me feel like I was practically involved in his rare journeys. Now I truly believe he is one of the luckiest men in the world.
