Tibetan Buddhist Lama Tenzin Tsundu created a sacred sand mandala of green tara, the female Buddha of Compassion, at Gibsons United Church during the last week of June.

The mandala was painstakingly made by placing grains of coloured sand in intricate traditional patterns and took seven, 10-hour days to complete. The public was present for morning prayers and traditional chants and came to watch the progress throughout the week.

When the mandala was completed on June 30, there was a ceremony in which the sand was swept up into a pile to celebrate the impermanence of physical creations. Some of the sand was given to the 65 people present at the ceremony and the rest was ceremonially taken to the ocean nearby where its blessings were dispersed to all the world.
