Atom and peewee rep hockey players scored big time thanks to the community's support of the holiday food and clothing drives.

Members of the peewee team delivered coats and blankets to the First United Church to overwhelming thank yous. Trucks loaded with warm blankets and jackets drew a crowd outside the East Vancouver church. The kids were a bit nervous as throngs of people approached, and Nevan Flay, defenceman for the peewee Blues, wondered at the fact that someone could need a blanket so badly.

On Monday, Dec. 20, players delivered food, turkey bucks and cash donations to the Sunshine Coast Food Bank. A total of $50 in turkey bucks and $100 were donated along with bags and boxes of non-perishable food items. The items were collected throughout the month of December from fans that donated items whenever the team scored a goal.

"It makes us feel good that we can earn food for people when we score," said atom captain Tyler Stinchcombe.

These hockey players recognize that it is a privilege to play minor hockey and that it takes not only dedication from the parents, but community support as well. Rep hockey teams often ask the community for support so they may reach their goals. This is one way for the kids to give back.
