KidSport receives more support

KidSport Sunshine Coast was able to increase the number of kids on the Sunshine Coast to play in sports with a recent fundraiser hosted by Trail Bay Home Hardware and from contributions from the Sunshine Coast Lions Club.

On July 2, Sechelt-based Trail Bay Home Hardware invited Sunshine Coast KidSport Chapter to hold a free barbecue and donated a Broil King Monarch barbecue to raffle.

Dave Lamb of Home Hardware, Neil Clayton of Clayton's Heritage Market and AnnaColonna at MacDonalds all contributed to provide free hot dogs, popcorn, juice and even lollipops for the event.

With Trail Bay Home Hardware, Clayton's Heritage Market and MacDonalds community support, KidSport Sunshine Coast received donations that day of more than $750. This money goes directly to the kids on the Coast who participate in sports. KidSport covers registrations fees, up to $200 per year per child, and has enabled over 270 kids on the Coast to participate in a sport of their choice.

Jim Gray, director for Sunshine Coast KidSport, thanked Dave Lamb for his continued support of our youth and thanked the community for their donations at the barbecue including the winner. David Hierck.

The Lions Club exemplified their slogan of "Working Together For the Children in the Community" when club president LenSchollen, vice-president Paul Adams and director Richard Grant presented Diane Wagner and Tom Hierck with a cheque in the amount of $2,346.

Wagner said this money will sponsor kids from the Sechelt area in many sports. Registration fees covered three children in baseball, 15 children in soccer, one child in lacrosse and one child in horseback riding.

"We appreciate that the Sunshine Coast Lions Club has for the second year in a row, supported the youth in our community," said KidSport co-chair Carole Duff. "Many children could participate in the sport of their choice because of the generosity of the Sunshine Coast Lions Club."

Community Champions are organizations or individuals who contribute $2,000 or more a year to benefit youth on the Sunshine Coast. Other community champions in 2011 include the Grad Class of 2011 who organized the Elphi Fall Funfest.

If you wish to be a community champion, contact Wagner at 604-886-8510 or Duff at 604-886-9766 for information.
