The Beachcombers Advanced Toastmasters Club of Gibsons is hosting a virtual pub night on Oct. 18, offering a high-spirited introduction to its passion for verbal communication.

Four Toastmasters clubs are active on the Sunshine Coast, meeting regularly using web conferencing technology. The Beachcombers’ virtual pub night was inspired by the camaraderie and light-hearted traditions of British pubs, translated into an online setting. Attendees will hoist and sip their favourite beverages throughout the event.

“When we thought about a typical Toastmasters gathering,” said Laurel Sukkau, president of the Beachcombers Advanced Toastmasters, “we realized it had all the attributes of a fun-filled night at a cozy neighbourhood public house. There’s laughter, stories, and enthusiastic speech-making. The theme was the perfect fit for our online open house. Also, it might be the world’s only pub night where you communicate more clearly when you leave than when you arrive.”

The event is free of charge and is open to all adults. Attendees should prepare to participate by chilling their preferred refreshments and booting up an internet-connected webcam and microphone.

In addition to information about the Toastmasters education program, the evening will feature a singalong, open mic session, and a trivia competition. Winners will receive gift certificates for Gibsons-area businesses. Details about all Sunshine Coast Toastmasters groups will be available should attendees want to indulge in further rounds of speech-making.

A registration form and essential internet connection details can be found on the club’s website at beachcombers.toastmastersclubs.org. The event will run from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
