Here comes the sun!

Take cover in the heat of the summer on Davis Bay beach.

With summer in full swing, it’s a wonderful time to enjoy even more sunshine on the Coast. However, many of us get so stoked by the enticing warm rays we neglect the basics of protecting ourselves from the dangers of too much sun – on a single occasion or over time. The results can be painful and dangerous – sunburns, heatstroke. And they can also be even longer lasting – skin damage and over-exposure to harmful ultra violet (UV) rays, which can contribute to skin cancer.

So why not be safe and enjoy the sunshine at the same time? Here’s how.

Remember to take cover. Mind the clock and avoid full exposure to the sun when it is highest in the sky and at its peak during the day, between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. You’ll enjoy the sweet softness of gentler rays of the sun in the early morning and late afternoon.  If you must be outdoors for the whole day, seek shelter from the sun as often as you can.

Making a simple sun shelter is a fun way to start the day with a family on the beach. All you need are some sturdy driftwood poles, a light sheet, ties or clamps and some elbow grease. Dig and secure four poles into the sand or pebble beach, selecting two higher poles for the front. Then tie each corner of the sheet to the tops of the poles. Fortify with ropes or guy wires.

Super convenient pop-up sun-shelters and basic beach umbrellas are also available and allow you to enjoy views of the beach while you rest, read and relax. Hats, good quality sunglasses and loose clothing to cover your limbs will help to protect your body and eyes as you enjoy your days in the sun.

If you’re planning to swim or take part in other outdoor activities where your skin will be uncovered, choose a natural sunscreen to help protect you from the dangers of overexposure to UV rays. Natural sunscreens are healthier for your skin and safer for the environment. Standard commercial sunscreens can contain harsh chemicals that may be harmful when absorbed by your skin and are also detrimental to ocean- and fresh-water ecosystems. Read labels carefully and select ocean-friendly sunscreens with natural ingredients that provide adequate SPF (sun protection factor). Look for sunscreens with an SPF of at least 15 to 30 to provide basic sun protection. Apply liberally and often, especially if you are in and out of the water.

Looking for a sun-kissed glow without the dangers of sun exposure? Try a healthy self-tanner or spray tan. Organic products and service providers can naturally darken your skin by a few shades with the results lasting for five to 10 days. Pay careful attention to application tips and pre- and post-tan care suggestions for best results and to avoid tell-tale streaks.

Drink lots of water to stay hydrated. And pay special attention to those in your life who might need some extra help managing their sun protection – including children, the elderly and your pets.
