This Saturday, Sept. 17, please join Jean Pate and Carol Bowman at the Activity Centre at Lilies Lake in Madeira Park for the first meeting of Flair on the Coast in the Harbour, 10 a.m. to noon. For more info, call 604-883-0660.

Pender Harbour Wildlife Society presents Vancouver Island Marmots: A Detective Story, with Andrew Bryant, Tuesday Sept. 20, 7 p.m. at Pender Harbour Secondary School. Bryant began working with marmots in 1987, co-founded the Recovery Team in 1988 and served as its scientific advisor for two decades. By 1998 he’d seen the world population fall to about 70 animals and the prognosis was grim.

An 11th hour captive-breeding program ultimately prevented extinction of this uniquely Canadian species and provided marmots for ongoing reintroduction efforts. Refreshments will be served. All are welcome; no membership required. Updates at [email protected]

Come join the Ruby Lake Lagoon Society at their AGM on Sunday, Sept. 25 at the Iris Griffith Centre starting at 2 p.m. Hear what’s happening with PODS and many other initiatives. Stay for the potluck and entertainment.

An education series on dementia will be held on the Sunshine Coast, including Getting to Know Dementia; Transitions: Coming to terms with a life you didn’t plan; Your Voice Matters: Advocacy Tips for Caregivers; and Understanding Communication and Behaviours. For further information or to register, contact 604-984-8347 or [email protected]

The Legion Ladies Night is coming up Oct. 15 with live music by Playback. Tickets at the Legion or Harbour Insurance. The Pender Harbour Fire Department will be raising funds for Fireworks Night at Quiz Night on Sept. 30.

Paws for a Cause last Sunday, sponsored by the super-star staff of Sunshine Coast BCSPCA, was a fabulous success. Thanks to all the folks and pups that made it so!
