Pender Harbour & Egmont

The much anticipated 13th annual Pender Harbour Blues Festival, three days of fantastic entertainment, gets underway this weekend. The line up at the Legion includes David Gogo on Friday night and Jim Byrnes on Saturday night, from 8 p.m. to midnight. Sunday afternoon (June 5) is the All-Star Jam from 2:30 to 6 p.m. followed by Gary Comeau, 8 p.m. to midnight. See www.phblues.ca for complete concert information and ticket purchase. (There will not be a meat draw at the Legion on Sunday.)

Egmont Day is this Saturday, June 4, starting at 9 a.m. with the kids fishing derby (for ages 12 and under) followed by the parade, party ponies, petting zoo, tug-of-war, field races and a BBQ lunch. All the activities are free. In the evening, there is dinner with singer-songwriter Chelsea Charlton and an all-ages dance. The wonderful heritage museum (built, created, curated and cared for by the fine volunteers of Egmont) will be open to visitors.

Wednesday, June 8 is World Ocean Day and the Ruby Lake Lagoon Society is celebrating with Ocean Commotion, a fun event for lovers of all living things. The evening will begin at 6 p.m. with a presentation from Liz Cunningham about her book Ocean Country. Copies are on sale now at the EarthFair Store. Drinks and canapés will follow with musical accompaniment from Serena Eades and her new band Sostenuto. There will be hug contests, a silent auction and door prizes. Tickets are available now ($20 for members, $30 for non-members) at EarthFair Store. All proceeds go towards the exciting Pender Ocean Discovery Station (PODS) project.

The Pender Harbour pool is doing an accessibility renovation to the family change room and main pool area. There will be partial closures June 8 to 11 of the family change room and main pool. The gym will remain open during this time, and there will be access to both men’s and women’s change rooms.

Harbourside Friendship meets Thursday at 10:30 a.m. featuring Sailing Adventures with Heather and Ted Taylor. Lunch is served at noon for $10.

The Pender Harbour Choir’s Music in the Air spring concerts will be held Saturday, June 11 at 7 p.m. at St. John’s United Church in Davis Bay, and Sunday, June 12 at 7 p.m. at the School of Music in Madeira Park. They are very excited to present their program of folk, classical and popular songs, directed by Joy McLeod and accompanied by David Poon. Pender Harbour Com-munity School has great programs and the time to register is now. Start summer with something fun for the kids or grandkids. Pender Harbour Summer Day Camp runs Monday to Friday, July 4 to 15, for ages five to 12. To pre-register, call 604-885-6866.

And don’t miss a fun and free weekly event for kids ages five to 12 – a fishing club – on Thursdays 3 p.m. at Madeira Park Elementary School until the end of June.

Pender Harbour Garden Club will be joining the Sechelt Garden Club on an all-day garden tour on Monday, June 13, touring gardens in the morning, a break for lunch, tea and sweets at the Seaside Centre and more gardens in the afternoon. Email Naomi for details at [email protected]
