The annual Sunshine Coast Pottery Prowl is happening this year on July 5 and 6, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. This is the fourth prowl, now featuring a total of 18 studios and 21 artists on the map to visit (the event has grown from only eight in the first year). In Halfmoon Bay we have two local potters opening their studios for the event.
Marilyn Downey Pottery (8068 Southwood Road) will have her backyard studio filled with unique pieces open to visitors. I asked Marilyn about what she has going on for this year’s prowl and she told me, “Come by and see what I have been up to this year in the studio. Along with functional and decorative dinner ware…. now my jellyfish are not only for hanging in the garden they adorn bowls and plates for your table. It has also been fun working on whimsical pieces to enhance the garden.” Marilyn can be reached at [email protected] or by phone at 604-740-6330.
A block away at Huckleberry Studios (8098 Dogwood Drive) Naomi Brand, a local potter inspired by the ocean waves, the seaweed and our beautiful local forests, is participating as well. Naomi tells me she’s making shallow striped coastal blue bowls perfect for salads that have wild clay from Francis beach on them. Also, Naomi is making bumpy, undulating vases that resemble large pieces of bull kelp seaweed and drippy pink and cream mugs and bright blue mugs on chocolate coloured clay. Naomi can often be found at the Sechelt Artisans Market and can be reached on Instagram @huckleberrystudio or by calling 604-740-6248.
Don’t miss your chance to support local artists and learn more about their craft. The Prowl is a great opportunity to meet local makers and purchase unique hand-crafted items in our own backyard. For more information on this event please visit linktr.ee/potteryprowl.
A few other dates to note this July. Please mark your calendars for an exciting event at the Halfmoon Bay Volunteer Fire Department’s Hall One (8971 Redrooffs Rd.) on July 12, starting at noon. We will be hosting our annual Tin Man Challenge, and this will be open to the public as well. More details to come closer to date.
We have the 57th Halfmoon Bay Fair happening Sunday, July 13 (a personal favorite event of mine). The HBCA is needing volunteers to help support this cherished community tradition. Please reach out to Tim Dayton of the HBCA at [email protected] if you can lend a hand.
Please feel free to contact me at [email protected] if you have any upcoming events to be featured or want to connect about all things happening in Halfmoon Bay. Kyla Trethewey, columnist and Halfmoon Bay Firefighter #36.
