This weekend is the 50th anniversary celebration of the Halfmoon Bay Country Fair.
The fun begins Saturday, 9:30 to 11 a.m. at the Halfmoon Bay wharf, with the Kids Fishing Tournament for ages two to 12. Registration is at the Halfmoon Bay Café at 9:15 a.m., and entrants will be eligible for fabulous prizes.
At 6 p.m. at Coopers Green Park there is a BBQ sockeye salmon dinner and dance. Tickets are $25 and includes live music from Poppa Greg and the Chillin’ Dylans. There are a few tickets left at Halfmoon Bay General Store and Welcome Woods Market. If you would like to attend just for the dinner, you can pay at the door: adults $15, under 16 for $8, and free under two.
On Sunday, July 10, the theme for the anniversary fair is the 1960s. Prizes will be awarded for the best costumes.
The fair kicks off at 9 a.m. with the traditional Sunshine Coast Healthcare Auxiliary’s pancake breakfast.
The 3.5-mile trophy race will start at Connor Park and finish at Coopers Green. Registration begins at 9 a.m.
The official opening and cutting of the anniversary cake takes place at 11 a.m. followed by over 30 local vendors, bingo, cakewalk, pony rides, dunk tank, beer garden, and children’s games (duck pluck, dino dig, bean bag toss, Minion super soaker shoot, balloon darts, golf, ring toss, and a bouncy castle).
Centre stage will feature performances by Joe Stanton and Simon Paradis, Matt Diamond, Katie and the Cornpones, Poppa Greg and the Chillin’ Dylans, and Halfmoon Bay’s answer to the Beatles – The Seaweeds. Rumour has it that Cher may drop by. There will be a 1960s fashion show by Angelic Visions. And two special performances for the children by the Sunshine Coast’s Driftwood Players are planned.
MP Pamela Goldsmith-Jones will attend the pancake breakfast before opening the Fair with Halfmoon Bay director Garry Nohr, at 11:30 a.m. They will then go on to the Halfmoon Bay Café about 1 p.m. to meet and greet and will be available to answer questions, address concerns or talk about Goldsmith-Jones’ job as Foreign Affairs Parliamentary Secretary.
