Habitat for Humanity Sunshine Coast has hired a new executive director. Cori-Lynn Germiquet will take over the reins Aug. 15

“We are excited to welcome Cori-Lynn to the Sunshine Coast Habitat Affiliate,” Mat Sadler, chair of the board of directors, said. “We look forward to her leadership as we work together continuing our mission of providing affordable housing in our community.”

Germiquet has served as CEO of the Powell River, Nanaimo and the New Westminster Chambers of Commerce. She says she is looking forward to joining Habitat for Humanity here – especially since her children were all born in Powell River.

“It is an honour to be part of this wonderful group of professional staff, board of directors and volunteers and join them in their commitment to the Sunshine Coast community. It has been my 20-year dream to work with Habitat for Humanity, and to be able to return to the Coast and realize that dream is incredible.”

Habitat for Humanity recently celebrated its 12th anniversary on the Sunshine Coast. During that time, the affiliate, which was once one of the smallest in Canada, has built 13 affordable homes in partnership with families, volunteers, and donors. Families who qualify for Habitat’s affordable housing must put in 500 hours of volunteer work in lieu of a down payment on the homes. They then assume an interest-free mortgage.

The organization is based on Christian principles, which call on all people regardless of religious or cultural background to make safe, simple, affordable housing a matter of conscience and action.

Local donors generously contribute everything from septic fields to kitchen cabinets, and local tradespeople work side by side with volunteers to do the building and installing.

Although a recent membership drive was quite successful, the affiliate is still in great need of volunteers at the building site.

Volunteers are also needed at the beverage container recycling operation at Salish Soils and at the ReStore.
