The 150 Celebration Canoe Journey paddlers thought they were just landing at Roberts Creek for lunch on June 16, but in fact they were helping the Sunshine Coast Grandmothers raise money for the Stephen Lewis Foundation.
Paddler Marlene Stephens was the one who suggested that the Grandmothers get involved and provide 100 lunches for the occasion. As well as being an experienced paddler, Stephens is also part of the Grandmothers group, which is always looking for new ways to raise funds for Grandmothers in Africa who are raising their own grandchildren due to the AIDS pandemic there.
Thanks to the community support and generous donations from Coast businesses, the Stephen Lewis Foundation will benefit.
African Grandmothers are the heroes of their continent, and the Sunshine Coast Grandmothers strive to support them in any way possible.
