The Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) recently made upgrades at the Pender Harbour Aquatic and Fitness Centre that will allow people with injuries or those with limited mobility to have better access in the family change area, main pool and hot tub.
The SCRD was successful in receiving a grant from the Enabling Accessibility Fund with Human Resources and Skills Development Canada. The grant was for $25,660 with a requirement that the SCRD contribute $15,000 to the project.
The upgrades include the addition of ceiling tracks throughout the family change room to give access to an adjustable height change table area, shower and washroom. The ceiling track continues along to allow for access to both main pool and hot tub areas. Specialized equipment also includes a shower chair and wheelchair for use in the aquatic environment.
“These are exciting enhancements to the Aquatic and Fitness Centre as they will make it so much easier for individuals who need varying levels of assistance to access the restorative and healing benefits of water,” says Deb Cole, manager of the Fitness Centre.
There is no charge for caregivers or attendants to access the facility if they are assisting a person with a disability who requires support to participate in recreation programs and services offered by the SCRD.
