Mood and anxiety disorders can affect anyone, but unfortunately, they often go unrecognized, especially in the early stages. Feelings of hopelessness, despair and emptiness or disproportionate anger and irritation may be signs of depression. Racing thoughts, reckless spending and sleeplessness are common symptoms of mania. Overwhelming worry or panic that paralyzes the normal routine of life could be signs of an anxiety disorder.

Back to school stress, seasonal change and the day-to-day pressures of work, family and finances are common triggers for the onset and flare-ups of mental illness. Symptoms can be confusing and lead to social isolation, but medical help and social support are available.

The BC Schizophrenia Society - Sunshine Coast branch is pleased to host the fourth annual Beyond the Blues: Depression Anxiety Education and Screening event, set for Oct. 11 and 12. Held in partnership with the Canadian Mental Health Association, volunteers will be manning tables fully stocked with information and resources, including mental health wellness screens. Mental clinicians will also be available for consultation either for yourself or on behalf of a loved one.

This year's events will take place in Gibsons at Sunnycrest Mall on Friday, Oct. 11, and in Sechelt at Trail Bay Centre on Saturday, Oct. 12. Hours at each venue are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., with mental health clinicians on site from 11 a.m. to 1p.m.

We look forward to seeing you there. For further information, including self screens for depression, anxiety and risky drinking patterns, see www.heretohelp.bc.ca/beyond-the-blues.
