On Thursday, July 4, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., the community is invited to a free workshop, Community is the Medicine.

The workshop will be facilitated by Darien Thira and will be held at the Sechelt Indian Band Hall.

This strength-based workshop supports the community to understand their current challenges in terms of historical wounds and current pressures, with an emphasis on colonization and its impacts (on both the colonizer and the colonized). It explores the power of cultural values and draws upon community strengths, and identifies the source of individual and community resilience, community activities that promote collaboration and the next steps that will lead to community wellness.

Designed specifically for First Nation and non-Native mixed communities, the workshop's respectful and interactive approach to teaching (including practicecircles, small and large group discussions, questionnaires, role-plays and other exercises) will encourage the participants to share their cultures, values, experiences and skills with one another and to build on their own and thecommunity's strengths.
