Coast winemakers win awards

Sunshine Coast Amateur Winemakers’ Association

The Sunshine Coast Amateur Winemakers’ Association (SCAWA) recently won over 29 medals at the Vancouver Amateur Winemakers’ Association (VAWA)  2017 competition hosted on the weekend of April 21 and 22. The SCAWA is one of 11 clubs in British Columbia, and the Sunshine Coast group took home three gold medals at the annual competition. One member received the Winemaker of the Year achievement for the event.

Approximately half of the B.C. clubs host competitions with trained judges from the B.C. Amateur Wine Judges Guild. These club competitions have a competitive component should members want to participate. The competitions feature individual wines entered into classes, such as Chardonnay or Bordeaux-style, and are judged and scored for a possible 20 points rating the appearance of the wine, aroma, balance, initial flavour, finish and overall general quality.

All entrants are provided with score sheets following the competition and judges provide comments and feedback.

SCAWA has a membership of 25, and the club has been very active in the last few years learning to use the techniques of how to make high quality wines. Their efforts are reflected in the number of medals attained. Grapes or juice are sourced from the Okanagan Valley, Washington and California. The club meets on the second Wednesday of the month with special tastings and extra technical meetings as well.
