The Farm Gate Market in Roberts Creek will be celebrating Farmer’s Appreciation week with a specil event day on Wednesday, Sept. 10.

The fifth annual Farmers Appreciation Week is a celebration of the important contribution that local food and its growers make to our lives.

Once again the event, which is celebrated at farmer’s markets across B.C., will take place locally at the Farm Gate Market this Wednesday Sept. 10, from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Roberts Creek Hall.

Besides the abundance of local and organic produce, baked goods, honey, eggs, preserves, prepared food and so much more that market goers have come to expect from the Farm Gate there will be live music, poetry readings and a corn roast featuring local, organic, non GMO peaches and cream corn.

In conjunction with Farmers Appreciation Week, The BC Association of Farmers Markets (BCAFM) is holding the ‘Ode to a Farmer’ contest. This contest invites British Columbians to show their appreciation for local farmers in the form of a poem, ballad, haiku, limerick — the style is up to you.

The grand prize winner will win $150 to spend at the market of their choice and a lucky local winner will receive $50 to spend at a market.

“B.C. farmers are our best source for fresh, healthy, local food,” said Jon Bell, local farmer and BCAFM president. “The poetry contest is a means to express our gratitude for B.C. farmers and all the ways they contribute to our health, communities and economy.”

Submissions will be accepted until Sunday, Sept. 7 at 11:59 p.m. so get writing! Writers can also bring their creations to the Market on Wednesday to share with farmers and the public alike.

For more information on the contest, the BCAFM and the Farm Gate Market visit the website at www.bcfarmersmarket.org.

Now in its sixth year, The Farm Gate gathers every Wednesday afternoon until Oct. 29.
