Call goes out for special grannies

If you are a granny who loves children, who has always wanted to make a difference and is wondering what your special contribution, the one that encompasses all your life experiences, and expands on them, is – this could be it.

The Granny Brigade is coming to one of our local schools this fall. Grannies look out at this fast-paced, technically savvy world and wonder who is here for the children. As Gabor Maté  and Gordon Neufeld point out, our children, from shortly after birth, are often being raised in groups largely by other children. Who has the time or energy to listen? Who sees each one as a unique, one-of-a-kind, delightful individual? Who reminds them and us who we really are?

The Granny Brigade is a group of specially trained volunteers who commit a half a day per week to be in a school. Children who are acting out, getting “in trouble,” being disruptive or just not present, instead of being bawled out, sent to the hall or the principal’s office, will go to the Granny. She does not tutor, give advice, show them the error of their ways, exact apologies. She listens – listens in a very special way like a metaphorical hug.
