During the weekend of Feb. 17, the Army Cadets of 2963 Seaforth Highlanders took to Dakota Ridge for their winter field training exercise.

The weather was excellent as the cadets learned skills vital to surviving in the wild if they ever became lost. After the lessons were completed, they spent Saturday learning to cross-country ski and also took hikes on the snowshoe trails.

On Sunday the cadets set up a demonstration range complete with Daisy air rifles to show the young Jackrabbit skiers what a biathlon course and range would look like.

The Jackrabbit program isa fun way for kids to learn basic cross-country ski skills while providing an opportunity to ski and socialize with their parents and friends. It also helps children to develop confidence, learn outdoor winter safety skills and build overall motor skills.

Combining the older Jackrabbits of the group with the cadets taught both groups some valuable lessons. It showed the young skiers some of the things they could expect from a biathlon competition, and it gave the senior cadets a chance to work with kids who are younger than the age group they are used to.

The 2963 Seaforth Highlanders of Canada Army Cadet Corps would like to thank everyone involved in the weekend activities, especially the volunteers who worked hard to groom Dakota Ridge and the parents and coaches who work tirelessly with the Jackrabbit program.
