Armchair garden travels

Nearly everyone loves to travel to exotic places, and whether or not you are a gardener, it's always a pleasure to visit gardens.

Nearly everyone loves to travel to exotic places, and whether or not you are a gardener, it's always a pleasure to visit gardens.

If you're not travelling south or abroad this month, you'll appreciate the opportunity to visit gardens around the world at the "armchair travel" session at the Sunshine Coast Botanical Garden on Wednesday, Jan. 12, in the Garden Pavilion, 5941 Mason Rd., Sechelt. Doors open for refreshments at 7, show time is 7:30 p.m.

If you are planning a visit to England, France, Mexico, Quebec, New Zealand or South Africa, or even just driving to California, this session will be a gold mine of suggested garden destinations.

Six garden travellers will present a few gardens each and provide contacts and "if you go" details. You'll see great photos, learn how seasoned travellers find excellent local gardens that are open to the public, and even some strategies for gaining entrance to private gardens not normally open. Special maps, useful books, websites and other travel tips and nuggets will be shared. And there will be photos from a trip-of-a-lifetime to a decidedly non-gardening destination.

So while our friends may be wasting time by pools or on white sandy beaches in warm latitudes waiting for their luggage to catch up with them, we'll travel the world effortlessly, seeing exceptional and stimulating lesser-known gardens in comfort.

Admission to Armchair Travel is by donation at the door - $5 to $20 is suggested, or a good bottle of something to be auctioned at the upcoming Grow the Garden Gala.
