A simple walk in the morning

"Watch us go" is the motivating slogan behind the Gibsons' Toastmasters group, Morningstars. The members take the idea literally. They are planning a community walk this Saturday, Jan. 15, starting at 10 a.m. until about noon, and they invite anyone interested in the idea to join them - that means you, your friends and your children.

"It's a low tech, high spirit event," said Toastmaster Patricia Hetherington, who has already traced a route leading from St. Bart's Anglican Church in Gibsons to Soames Park and back to the church for a simple lunch available by donation.

There are no fundraising pledges, no banner waving, no fees, no competition, no fancy T-shirts or prizes. It's strictly show up and walk for the joy of it.

"The process is the prize," Hetherington adds.

The Morningstars picked January for this fresh air walk because it's a time for simple things after the excesses of Christmas. You may start and end whenever you wish. Most of the group will walk along North Road from St. Bart's, turn right onto Reed, left on Chamberlin and continue to Soames on Bridgeman. Or you can leave your car just outside the park and join in there or wander in whatever direction suits you.

Toastmasters' Sandra Wrightman suggests this could be a saunter, a stroll, a catch-up with old friends or an opportunity to meet new friends with whom you may want to walk again. It takes place rain, snow or shine. If you have questions, phone Wrightman at 604-886-2908.

Morningstars meets Wednesdays from 7:15 to 8:30 a.m. at Harmony Hall in Gibsons. They will be hosting an open house breakfast on Wednesday, Jan. 26 at 7:15 a.m. for those wanting to know more about the organization.
