The Coast Recital Society (CRS) continues its stellar 2018-19 concert season this Sunday, Nov. 25, at Raven’s Cry Theatre, with a recital by violinist Laurence Kayaleh and pianist Michelle Mares. The concert begins at 2:30 p.m. with a pre-concert chat with the artists led by CRS artistic director Frances Wainwright at 1:30 p.m.

Both Kayaleh and Mares are Canadian musicians of deep musical insight, recognized internationally for the virtuosity and exuberance of their performance style.

Kayaleh’s artistry is characterized by a rich, singing tone, a natural feeling for style, impeccable technique, and innate musicality of the grand tradition of violin playing. At her Paris debut at the Théâtre du Châtelet, the world-renowned critic of Le Figaro, Pierre Petit, described her playing as regal, praising her wonderful sound and her innate sense of phrasing. Kayaleh performs on a magnificent Pietro Guarneri built by the Venetian master in 1742, which belonged to the eminent violinist and pedagogue, Carl Flesch.

Mares has led an active performing career in both Canada and Europe spanning the entire piano repertoire as a soloist and chamber musician. She has performed with virtually every major orchestra in Canada as a soloist, and her performances have enjoyed national and international radio broadcast. Some of the orchestras she has appeared with in Europe include L’Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Basel Symphony Orchestra, Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra, Polish Chamber Orchestra and the Netherlands Radio Chamber Orchestra.

The unusual and inspiring Kayaleh-Mares program will feature sonatas for violin and piano by Karol Szymanowski, Johannes Brahms and Edvard Grieg.
