The Sunshine Coast Film Society presents Starlight Film Night to launch the new 2012/13 film season this Sunday, Sept. 2, at Winegarden Waterfront Park in Gibsons.
Music starts at 7 p.m. and movies at dusk (about 8:30 p.m.) The show features Music in the Landing's Billy Hillpicker Band, special guest Jackson Davies from The Beachcombers and MC Cody Coyote (the perennial six-year-old). The Film Society invites everyone to bring beach blankets and lawn chairs to the park for a free evening of outdoor family movies, face painting, popcorn and lawn prizes. The program is suitable for all ages - an episode of The Beachcombers, (with comment by Davies), Wallace and Gromit, The Wrong Trousers and Pixar's Presto, to keep you laughing.Bring warm jackets and a flashlight. Season film series memberships will be on sale.
Last Landing music
Music in the Landing winds up this weekend.
Tonight (Friday), gather at 7 p.m. forthe Duttons, a large group of pickers and strummers who share the gazebo with fans and friends in what has become a "kitchen party" tradition forthe music series. There will be noperformances on Saturday.
On Sunday, at the Sundial Stage next to the Market, singer songwriters Ross Hastings and Chelsea Crawford return to Gibsons for a special treat of vocals, guitars and piano. Sunday's last show of the season is a musical collaboration with Starlight Film Night at 7 p.m. in Winegarden Park.

Music Makers
Music Makers is offering a wide range of programs for all ages this fall, including preschool music, Suzuki violin,family,adult and gospel choirs,guitar gang, a pennywhistle/theory workshop, and beginner and intermediate adult fiddling. Lynne Dickson will host a vocal tune-up on Sept. 9 from 1 to 3 p.m. atthestudio. Registration day is Sept. 5 from 3:30 to 6 p.m. also at the studio, 4669 Simpkins Road in Davis Bay. Auditions
The Coasting Along Theatre Society is pleased to announce open auditions for the inaugural Nutcracker ballet, music by Peter Tchaikovsky, libretto adapted from E.T.A. Hoffmann's story The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, with choreography after Ivanov/Petipa by David and Kathleen Holmes.
Professional and non-professional roles will be cast. The 2012 run will includeat least five performances featuring a double cast of over 100 dancers.

Dance classes
Registration takes place this Wednesday, Sept. 5 from 4 to 7 p.m. for dance classes at the Halfmoon Bay Performing Arts School. Indigo artists
FibreWorks Studio and Gallery presents Singing the Blues: Indigo Dyeing with Ros Aylmer on Wednesday, Sept. 5. Vats will be set up at FibreWorks on the deck from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.Bring your natural fibre yarns and fabrics ready to work with two indigo vats: natural indigo and one made with iron and lime or calx to activate the dyestuff.
Participants come away with a greater understanding of this magical dye, and lovely blue fabrics and yarn.

Happy news
Artist, author and performer Jean-Pierre Makosso announced recently that after many years apart, his wife, who lives in the Congo, has just received her visa allowing her to come to Canada. Makosso is happy to broadcast this good news to the community who has been supporting him in his work and waiting for this moment to happen. She will likely arrive in September.
