Four ensembles bring sparkle to Christmas

Here we are already, the first week of December … Christmas fairs, teas, skiing and, of course, the Sunshine Coast Community Orchestra Association’s Christmas Concert, the popular mini-sampling of musical wares for all ages, performing this year at the Chatelech Theatre, Sechelt With the outlets already out of tickets as this goes to print, the concert appears to be a certain sell-out. However, there are always a limited number of tickets available at the door for those willing to take their chances when the ticket desk opens at 1:30 p.m.

Of the four ensembles, the largest is the Coast Symphony Orchestra. This will be the first glimpse of the orchestra’s new conductor, Jonathan Der, who travels over from Richmond every week. A violinist, church organist and choral conductor, he has conducted in Canada and the U.S. The Symphony will be serenading the crowd with highlights from Tchaikowsky’s Nutcracker.

The Suncoast Concert Band features wind and brass instruments kept upbeat by the lively percussion section of Val Anderson and Tim Enns. Coming from the North Shore where he conducts three other community bands, Tak Maeda is great fun to play with, and is popular with audiences here on the Coast. Selections include Joyeux Noel, a medley of traditional French carols, and The Christmas Song by Mel Tormé, featuring a perky alto sax solo.

Conducting both remaining ensembles is Coast teacher and performer, Sarah Poon. The Coast Chamber Strings is a dynamic group of local string players, both amateur and professional. They will be bringing Christmas cheer to the Coast audience with a delightful array of music by Del Borgo, Mozart and Holst. Watch for a little Latin surprise!

The Sunshine Coast Youth Orchestra – made up of string-playing youth from all over the Coast – has been preparing festive melodies and favourites to keep you smiling and humming along. They’ve also invited special guests to join in their fun!

Alec Tebbutt has again agreed to be Master of Ceremonies, and carols and refreshments complete the event. Consider joining one of the groups in the New Year; new players are welcomed with open arms!

Tickets (if available) are $20 at Chatelech Theatre in Sechelt, Saturday, Dec. 15, at 2:30 p.m.
