The Coast Recital Society (CRS) 2015 scholarships were recently awarded to 14 young local students, ages nine to 24, to further their study of classical music.

Hanna Crudele, violin, and Holly Beckmyer, soprano, received the Ross Brougham Award, given annually to the student with the highest mark from the CRS scholarship committee. This year, the committee awarded two Ross Brougham awards, due to the quality of musicianship demonstrated by both Hanna Crudele and Holly Beckmyer. This award is named after Ross Brougham, a great music lover, who served as treasurer of CRS for many years.

Other scholarships were awarded to Anneka Bonser, Brison Geue, Simon Gidora, Ariana Mason, Hanna Matsumoto, Amelia Grace Mellis, Bela Ord, Cameron Peters, Breanna Picard, Emily Picard, Callula Voodg, and Genevieve Ward.

In addition, four CRS Adjudicator’s Choice Awards were given out as part of this year’s SC Festival of the Performing Arts: Louis Dillon, voice; Simon Gidora, strings; Hanna Matsumoto, piano; and Shelley Paulus, PWB. CRS scholarships are funded from the sale of CDs at CRS concerts and from the proceeds from unused CRS tickets returned for resale.

The members of the CRS scholarship committee were: Elise Buqué, Nina Haedrich, Kathleen Hovey, Wendy Humphreys Tebbutt, John Storer, and Frances Wainwright. CRS scholarships applications are accepted in January or February of each year and are open to Sunshine Coast students, 25 years or younger, who are studying classical music.
