The Gibsons summertime free music program Music in the Landing has been going since 2003, and it’s back. Professional musicians in a variety of genres will be playing weekends in five different Lower Gibsons locations: under the Gazebo on the Wharf on Fridays from 7 to 8 p.m.; on Saturdays in Pioneer Square next to the visitor centre, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Winegarden Park bus stop 2 to 3:30 p.m., early evenings in Winegarden Park; and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sundays at the Sun Dial Stage next to the Sunday Market. Music in the Landing has a Facebook page where you can get the latest on who’s playing when.

Also in the Landing, Gibsons Public Market’s free atrium show has the Blue Line Duo from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 6.

Austin, Texas-based singer/songwriter and storyteller Jan Seides plays the Gumboot Café with “down-home honesty and up-town sophistication – folk to pop to jazz.” Doors at 7:30 p.m., show at 8:30 p.m. Admission will range from $10 to $20.

Coco Love Alcorn performs her soulful pop and jazz at Secret Beach Garden Stage in Gibsons, where she’ll be joined for a few numbers by host Deanna Knight. Admission is a $25 donation for the 7 p.m. show. Seating is limited; please reserve at 604-362-1280.

In Sechelt, Monty Montego and the Rocksteady Crew are on at 9 p.m. at the Lighthouse Pub.

Aloha spirit

The Sunshine Coast will have an esteemed guest this month with the arrival of Hawaiian hula master Kumu Puna Kalama Dawson. Hula is just one aspect of a Hawaiian spiritual tradition, and Puna, as she is called, travels internationally to share it. On Sunday, July 14, from 7 to 9 p.m., she will present an evening of hula, chant, song, talk story and sharing of the aloha spirit at the atrium in Gibsons Public Market. Puna also will be teaching daily hula classes in Gibsons from Tuesday, July 9 to Wednesday, July 16.

The events are hosted by long-time Puna student Dhyana Bartkow. Contact her at 604-886-9737 or [email protected]

More than décor

Redecor + Design on Cowrie Street in Sechelt is under new ownership and has opened a small gallery section. Starting on July 4, and on the first Thursday of every month, a new set of works will be hung on the shop’s gallery wall with a reception from 4 to 7 p.m. First up is Vancouver’s Dana Mooney, who paints abstract landscapes and also will bring a hand-painted pillow collection.

Blocks of life

An intriguing exhibition opened at the Doris Crowston Gallery at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre in Sechelt on July 4. Evolution of a Series is a solo exhibition of work by Sechelt artist Bill Wilkinson. The show follows what is described as a ten-year creative journey by the artist, from doodling boxes in the margins of notebooks to evolving a full exploration of what assemblages of two-dimensional blocks might mean vis-a-vis the inner self. A reception for the show will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, July 7 at the gallery.

A Tangled Web

A series by local painter Sandy Kay will be on display starting July 11 at Gibsons Public Art Gallery. A Tangled Web is “an artist’s perception of the dynamic and complex images she sees when she walks through the environmental treasure on the Sunshine Coast.” This series of works has been inspired by The Bog, as it’s known, at Smuggler Cove. A reception will be held at the gallery the afternoon of Saturday, July 13. The show will run until Aug. 11.

Kids learn art

Gibsons Public Art Gallery is offering two summer sessions for youngsters from ages 5 to 12. From July 15 to 19, Karen Webb will lead five classes on Learning the Language of Art and Colour. And from Aug. 19 to 23, Miyuki Shinkai presents The Art of Story Telling: Painting, Drawing, Calligraphy, Mixed Media. There’s limited availability for both courses. Details on these and summer adult art classes at the gallery can be found at www.gpag.ca.
