Would-be film-goers had to be turned away at Raven’s Cry Theatre in Sechelt. Jan. 4.

Last Saturday’s matinée screening of the film Marianne and Leonard: Words of Love sold out Raven’s Cry Theatre in Sechelt and would-be viewers had to be turned away. There were two more screenings in Gibsons this week of the Nick Broomfield documentary about writer and musician Leonard Cohen and one of his first great loves and muses, Marianne Ihlen. Popular demand has prompted the Sunshine Coast Film Society to add another showing of the film, at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11 at Ravens Cry. Tickets are $5 for society members, who get priority admission. Non-members $9.

Vagina Monologues

Auditions will be held on Saturday, Jan. 11 for Vagina Monologues, to be performed March 7 at the Heritage Playhouse in Gibsons. The auditions, for about a dozen women’s reading roles, will be held at Yoga by the Sea, 1055 Roberts Creek Rd., from 2 to 5 p.m. Organizers say no theatre or public speaking experience is necessary to participate, and men are invited to volunteer to help promote and stage the production. The play, by American writer Eve Ensler, has become a huge international fundraiser for violence-prevention and victims’ programs. Proceeds from this performance will go to Sunshine Coast Community Services’ Together Against Violence project.

Emerging artists

Béla Ord is known locally both as a promising multi-instrumental musician and an award-winning artist with a penchant for drawing oddly appealing, imaginary creatures. Ord, 18, is teaming up with fellow artist Zac Harding, 16, for a month-long exhibition entitled The Eleventh Hour, at The Kube in Gibsons. Ord’s parents, Anna Lumiere and Graham Ord, will provide the music at the opening reception Friday, Jan. 10, from 6 to 9 p.m.

Friends of the Gallery

“Diverse, eclectic and fascinating – giving artists and the public a chance to experience Coastal art at its best.” That’s how the Sunshine Coast Arts Council describes its annual Friends of the Gallery exhibit, which will be showing from Sunday Jan. 12 until Feb. 3 at the Doris Crowston Gallery in Sechelt. Individual artists in the community were invited to submit one piece that they’d completed in the past year. It will be a richly diverse show, with more than 100 works on display. An opening reception will be held at the gallery on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m.

Coffee House cancelled

The Pender Harbour School of Music coffee house scheduled for Jan. 10 has been cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances.

Peanut Butter Jam

The winter edition of the twice-yearly Peanut Butter Jam fundraiser for the Sunshine Coast Food Bank will be held on Saturday, Jan. 11 at Roberts Creek Legion. The always-fun cover band Slightly Twisted will entertain, along with special guest Al Harlow, vocalist and guitarist with the band Prism. Showtime is 8 p.m.

More music

The Blue Line Duo of Gary Gilbert and Christopher Jordan Knox play Gibsons Public Market on Saturday, Jan. 11 from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. And the Sunday Jam at the Clubhouse Restaurant at the Pender Harbour Golf Course features the Steve Hinton Band, Jan. 12 from 2 to 6 p.m.

Pottery classes

Gibsons master potter Pat Forst suggests that “if pottery is something you have always wanted to try,” you might want to take up new classes she’s offering called Pottery on the Wheel, and Hand-building Functional Pottery, starting Jan. 14 and 15. Forst is also holding a Clay Wall Mural Workshop Feb. 1 and 2. For more information, contact [email protected] or call 604-840-0304.
