Local comedian Toby Hargrave is hosting the show with special guest Jacob Samuel and headliner Ivan Decker. Decker, a Vancouver native now based in Los Angeles, is on a roll, with a Netflix special coming out next year on the heels of his 2018 Juno win for best comedy album. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets $20 at Sechelt Visitor Centre, Laedeli Gifts and Cards or at local online ticket seller, share-there.com.

On the Wall – Off the Wall

Coast Creatives is putting out a last call for submissions to the upcoming show at the Gibsons Public Art Gallery. You have until 4 p.m. on Monday Nov. 5 to submit visual art or artists’ statements describing five-minute live-mic or performance-art pieces you’d like to offer. Performances will take place over three evenings and two Saturday afternoons through November. “The sole reason for this event is to give you amazing creative types a wall, podium or floor to share that serious or funny or uplifting or weird thing you do, give you time to explain why you do it and to have a good time,” says organizer Janice Williams. Submissions should be sent to gallery manager Michael Aze at [email protected]

The HA!Man is back

The HA!Man is the stage name of François le Roux, who has made several visits to the Sunshine Coast in recent years, performing with partner Jokë Debaere. Based in South Africa, le Roux “creates his music through spontaneous composition, layering pre-recorded tracks then playing cello and keyboards over them, whistling, vocalizing and sometimes dancing,” the group’s release says. Debaere, a Belgian poet and spoken word artist, has been collaborating and touring with le Roux since 2012. The show is at St. John’s United Church in Davis Bay on Sunday Nov. 4 at 3 p.m. Admission is by donation.

Choir callout

If you’ve always wanted to sing in a classical choir, this could be an opportunity. The Coast Messiah Choir is looking for more singers for the 2018-2019 season. Choir directors Sarah and Michael Poon say they’re currently rehearsing Bach’s Magnificat for the spring and the Christmas portion of Handel’s Messiah, along with some seasonal carols. They’re looking right now for low voices, which tend to be men’s. You don’t have to have had training or be able to read music, but it’s expected that participants will put in personal practice time at home, the Poons say. The choir rehearses weekly on Monday nights, 7 to 9 p.m. at St. John’s United Church in Davis Bay. Contact: [email protected].

The Poons also offer another choiring opportunity, with Vespersong, “dedicated to singing music for the Anglican service of evensong and the Catholic office of vespers.” Vespersong rehearses Friday afternoons at St. Bart’s Anglican Church in Gibsons. Email [email protected].
