The Vancouver Island Marmot named Mom #2, which Andrew Bryant tagged at Haley Lake Ecological Reserve, 1988.

The Pender Harbour Wildlife Society presents Vancouver Island Marmots: A Detective Story, with Andrew Bryant, Tuesday, Sept. 20, 7 p.m. at Pender Harbour High School.

Bryant began working with marmots in 1987, co-founded the Recovery Team in 1988, and served as its scientific advisor for two decades. By 1998 he’d seen the world population fall to about 70 animals – and the prognosis was grim.

An 11th hour captive-breeding program ultimately prevented extinction of this uniquely Canadian species and provided marmots for ongoing reintroduction efforts.
