Repair Café: Learn the fine art of repair

In a world overwhelmed with cheap, disposable consumer goods, broken objects are all around us. An economy of disposable goods has eliminated most local repair options, so concerned citizens are looking for other choices.

The Sunshine Coast is fortunate to have many local skilled tradespeople who are flexible in what the Gibsons Public Art Gallery is calling the Fine Art of Repair. In meeting these responsible repair people, in the ongoing series of local Repair Cafés, they have offered to help the community in some of the basics needed to begin using the tools of the repair craft, in a series of workshops at the Gibsons Public Art Gallery.

Two more workshops are scheduled to take place at the Gallery on the evenings of Tuesday, Feb. 26 and March 26. Sessions run from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

These unusual workshops are supported by funding grants from the Sunshine Coast Community Foundation, Town of Gibsons, and SCRD. Sessions are free for everyone. All are welcome to participate and learn through community conversations about repair – challenges, failures, successes and solutions. Creative problem solving is an art form that can be shared and learned.

Volunteers from the Repair Café also host sessions at Gibsons Public Library on the last Saturday of the month, 1 to 5 p.m. (next session is Feb. 23) and at Sunnycrest Mall on the second Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. (next session March 9). Bring your small appliances and other items for free repairs, or bring your expertise.
