Former Sunshine Coast ElderCollege board member Laurean Reid will be presented with the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers by Sechelt Mayor Darnelda Siegers on Jan. 10 at 2 p.m. at the Seaside Centre.
“As Reid has elected to have her medal presented in Sechelt, Mayor Siegers is standing in for the Governor General,” ElderCollege said in a release.
The ceremony will be followed by a reception and cake cutting. The event is by invitation due to limited seating.
ElderCollege nominated Reid for the medal and the nomination was endorsed by the Sunshine Coast Association for Community Living (SCACL) based on Reid’s long and dedicated volunteer work for both organizations. Reid’s volunteer work over four decades also includes the Rotary Club, the Salmonid Enhancement Society, Sunshine Coast Hospice Society and the Sechelt Hospital Foundation.
“A qualified registered nurse, Reid has applied her professional and administrative skills toward making our community better,” ElderCollege said.
The medal is an official Canadian honour created by the Crown and is part of the Canadian honours system administered by the Chancellery of Honours, part of the Office of the Secretary to the Governor General.
It is intended for an individual whose unpaid, voluntary, contribution provides “extraordinary help or care to individuals or groups in the community.”
The medal’s design was created by the Canadian Heraldic Authority and the medal is manufactured by the Royal Canadian Mint.
