Together with Roberts Creek Cohousing, West Wind Harbour Cohousing, a senior-focused group nearing the start of construction on a property located in Sooke, is hosting a cohousing information session on Saturday, Sept. 29 at 10:30 a.m. at the Roberts Creek Cohousing.

Cohousing started in Denmark a half-century ago when groups of people joined together to plan and build the neighbourhoods they wanted to live and thrive in. The housing movement spread to North America where people wanted an alternative to traditional housing models that tend to isolate people. In B.C., cohousing is gaining in popularity with a number of completed projects and others in development.

On the Sunshine Coast, Roberts Creek Cohousing was one of the first projects to be built in Canada. After years of planning and visualizing, the 31-unit project was successfully completed in 2004. The members have created a multigenerational neighbourhood with single homes and duplexes built around a large common house which contains a large kitchen and dining area, children’s play areas and guest rooms. The common house is the heart and soul of the community where its members play together, break together and celebrate together.

“Coastal Village Cohousing believes that the time is right for a second cohousing project on the Sunshine Coast,” the group said in a press release. “The newly forming project is looking to attract new members who share their vision of creating a multi-generational, multi-economic, environmentally sustainable community.”

If you are interested in attending the Sept. 29 session, registration is free at share-there.com.
