Dale Peterson and Eric Hammond, owner/operator of Sunshine Coast Water Taxi, are hosting a history and sightseeing tour of Howe Sound on Canada Day.

Gibsons history guru Dale Peterson will be out on the town – and on the water – this Canada Day weekend to share his wealth of knowledge about local history.

On July 1, the one-hour Howe Sound History and Sightseeing Tour leaves Gibsons Wharf at 10 a.m. via Sunshine Coast Water Taxi.

As well as viewing the natural splendour of Howe Sound, passengers will learn about its “rich, diverse history starting with Squamish First Nation, the early explorers and pioneers, various communities, different industries, the evolution of our marine transportation and the people who set records and who changed Canada’s history in business, politics, entertainment and sports,” Peterson said.

Tickets – $40 for a single person and $75 for two – are available at One Flower One Leaf, 436 Marine Drive in Gibsons. The maximum number of passengers allowed onboard is 11, so it will be first come first served.

On June 30, a historical walking tour through lower Gibsons will take place starting at Pioneer Park by the George Gibson statue. The tour, which is now in its fifth season, starts at 10 a.m. and lasts about 90 minutes. The tour is by donation and no registration is required.

“Just show up and be ready to be entertained and informed,” Peterson said.

He added that the most common feedback statements he hears after the walks are, “There is so much more to Gibsons than just another small town,” and after learning about the early pioneers’ workload, “We sure are a bunch of wimps today.”

For more information call Peterson at 604-886-1424.
