Sunshine Coast ElderCollege is going online this fall.

ElderCollege’s age group is particularly vulnerable to COVID-19 so it is inviting the community age 55 and up to preview its courses on YouTube or go to its webpage to read complete course descriptions of the fall 2020 program.

This year is ElderCollege’s 20th anniversary. In 20 years it has evolved from a small enterprising group that offered a few courses a year to become a successful force for third age education on the Sunshine Coast. To paraphrase Darwin: “It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent; it is the one most adaptable to change.”

ElderCollege intends to survive and is adapting to change. It’s offering 11 courses, all taught by local volunteer experts. This fall’s free, annual Clifford Smith Memorial Lecture is “The Immune System: Its Protective and Destructive Nature” by internationally celebrated immunology scientist, Dr. Erwin Diener.

Classes on offer are: Artists in the Studio – Sandy Kay, Coralie Swaney, Ruth Rodgers and Marlene Lowden; Restorative Justice – Nancy Denham; Mythical Creatures in Western Thought – Viveca Ohm; Hot Topics – Pat Hausberg and Selma Swaab; Drawdown – Judith Gordon; Enjoying Science Fiction and Fantasy – Clint Budd; Adventures in Travel – various presenters; Astrogeomorphology – Ray Kostaschuk; Canadian History (1848 to the Second World War) – Keith Maxwell; An Introduction to Astronomy -– members of the SC Astronomy Club; How to Create Great Photos with Your iPhone: Introduction – Jack Pope.

Social connection has always been an important part of ElderCollege. Classes will be delivered on Zoom and all classes will open half an hour before the class begins so participants have time to socialize and engage and become familiar with Zoom.

ElderCollege is a non-profit society funded solely by course fees. It is made up of volunteers including the presenters. It does not receive grants or donations and operates on a break-even basis. Courses are $35 each (no GST) and fees have been reduced by more than 20 per cent in recent years.

Registration

Formerly, registration was handled by the Sunshine Coast Regional District but as this service is no longer available, ElderCollege is implementing registration through its own web page. Payments will be via PayPal, either with a credit card or a PayPal account. You must pre-register online. There are class size limits.
