We’ve lost an incredibly special place

The Garden Bay Pub went up in flames last week, a sad and tragic event. This was an incredibly special place where the best of times was enjoyed, and precious memories made. There is a message repeated far and wide on our Coast right now to shop local. Support local business. With the recent loss of GBP, there is a greater message – a need for awareness; a call to gather to preserve, create and support locally owned enterprise. The Harbour area and Sunshine Coast have extraordinary creative and business minds; talented entrepreneurs and successful folks unafraid to invest. We have lost many treasures – Irvines Landing Pub, Laverne’s, down south the Wakefield and now the GBP. Roosen Farms would have made a fantastic community farm, a local source for fresh produce.

At this time, a greater appreciation and heartfelt thanks to the Grasshopper for rising from the ashes to provide a fabulous place for good times, and Mike Gojevic for making magic at the Clubhouse working through these tough times and keeping live music happening twice a week.

Always a great place to shop, The Bargain Barn has a super December special on the 2nd and 5th, a two-for-one sale and a spectacular toy sale. Don’t miss out! The last shopping day at The Barn is Dec. 19.

Serendipity (online) and FibreWorks Studio and Gallery at The Yurts offer beautiful, handcrafted items to help with your Christmas shopping through to Dec. 13.

The Harbour Gallery will open for a special Christmas sale Dec. 12, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (coinciding with the Serendipity fundraiser pickup) and Dec. 19, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The PH Community School at Madeira Park Elementary has had a breakfast program for children for years. Now breakfast will be served outside to any child who would like one Wednesdays and Fridays, 8 to 9 a.m. Give these good folks a kind honk as you (slowly) drive by.

Nicknamed “The Rocking Angel,” a wonderful, giving, local artist has been leaving beautiful painted rock creations throughout Madeira Park, bringing goodwill and joy to all that find them. Thank you! Your halo is shining bright.

The Pender Harbour branch of the Sunshine Coast Healthcare Auxiliary will once again host their annual In Lieu of Christmas Cards. Send your donation with the recipient’s names to Sunshine Coast Health Care Auxiliary Box 101, Madeira Park, BC, V0N 2H0. Please submit by Dec. 12. Contact Maureen Lee 604-883-2563 for more info.

Here are the contacts for ElderDog Sunshine Coast for those inquiring and wanting more information: [email protected] or call 604-865-1877.

The Pender Harbour Aquatic Society will be holding a virtual AGM on Dec. 14 at 7 p.m. All members of the Pender Harbour and Egmont community are welcome to attend, and should you wish to, please contact Robert Campbell at [email protected] for more information.
