Roberts Creek: How will you miss me if I don’t go away?

I had a whopper of a party last week, so while I nursed my hangover, I decided to skip one issue. But here I am, at your service.

I had a whopper of a party last week, so while I nursed my hangover, I decided to skip one issue. But here I am, at your service. A huge thank you to all the folks who came out to help me celebrate and especially to Clarence for sound duties and the ride home. Playing music with my friends has always been my preferred way to observe my birthday, and it was legendary.

So without further ado ... Friday, Jan. 31 the Cohousing Common House hosts a house concert featuring eclectic folk duo Claudia Russell and Bruce Kaplan. Doors at 7:30 p.m. Contact [email protected] for tickets.

Our Legion #219 this week: Tuesday Jam night with ADD, 7 to 11 p.m. Get down and play a song, sing or just enjoy the fun! Friday’s weekly Wilde Kitchen Dinner show has Jim Taylor on the 31st and Simon Paradis Feb. 7.

The resistance to the greed of the few that threatens our world is building. Creekers are no strangers to protest and many in our community take the words of Margaret Mead to heart, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” On Saturday, Feb. 1 the second annual Wet’suwet’en Solidarity Event is at the #219. Artists, speakers, information, music and dance to support the Wet’suwet’en at the RC Legion with #no trespass T-shirts for sale for only $20 with proceeds going to support their struggle to maintain control over their own land. Family friendly from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Now looking to next weekend … Friday, Feb. 7 is our monthly trivia challenge, Brain Freeze! Let the games begin, 7:45 p.m. sharp, $5 per person, teams of up to five. On Feb. 8 the Legion has ethereal soundscape artist Beatfarmer sailing in from Lasqueti Island. With DJ Granola Guru’s Tribal Bass, and Simon Haiduk on visuals all night. Volunteers wanted to tend the door – they will get in free!

Renew your membership, folks! Our Little Legion depends on us!

In other spots around the Creek, the Gumboot Restaurant has live music Wednesdays every week from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Also every Wednesday, the Sunshine Coast Ecological Farmers Market society runs the Farm Gate Market out of the Masonic Lodge from 1:30 to 6 p.m., selling local, organic, homemade products to our community. And just steps away, the RC Community Market offers fresh local greens, eggs, hot takeaway foods, baked breads, sweet treats and a kids’ zone –  1:30 to 5:30 p.m. at our Community Hall.

Putting the fun in fundraiser, the Roberts Creek Community Association is having a Bird House Building Contest and Auction! Build something magical and submit by Feb. 29 and you receive half the proceeds of the winning bid! Will yours be post-modern or post-and-beam? Tudor or arts and crafts? Get building and stay tuned for more info.
