Harbour Highlights: Celebrate Literacy Week

The Pender Harbour Literary Crawl is a fun community event that supports and encourages all forms of literacy in celebration of BC Family Literacy Week. Drop by many locations throughout the Harbour and collect letter beads to create a literacy bracelet. 

Book Nook in Egmont at the Community Hall welcomes everyone to come by and enjoy a good read Monday through Friday 12 to 4 p.m. On Tuesdays and Fridays 12:15 to 1:15 p.m., drop in for a guitar lesson. Thursdays, after school is storytime for kids. A call is out for volunteers for a few shifts, for a Tai Chi instructor and for westerns (soft or hard cover books). Why not become a Community Club member, too? 

Women’s Connection will start their 2019 season of gatherings Tuesday, Jan. 22, with an exciting, Scottish flavoured program. The talented, kilt-swishing Pender Harbour and Gibsons musicians know how to put on a great ceilidh (Scottish gathering). Join in for a morning of music, stories, treats and songs for the sake of Auld Lang Sang, 10 a.m. at the Hall. 

Come meet folks from community organizations and put finishing touches on your literacy bracelet at the Harbour Learning Centre Open House Wednesday, Jan. 25, 12 to 2 p.m. 

Harbourside Friendship, Thursday, Jan. 24 celebrates Literacy Week. Bring a book, share a book and earn a bead for your bracelet 10:30 a.m. at the PH Community Hall. Lunch is served at noon. Drop in $10. 

Friday, Jan. 25 at 5:30 p.m. experience POuND, The World’s First Cardio Jam Session inspired by the infectious, energizing and sweat-dripping fun of playing the drums, at Pender Harbour Aquatic and Fitness Centre. Preregister now in person or call 604-885-6866. Space is limited. 

The 43rd annual Robbie Burns Night at the Legion will take place Saturday, Jan. 26. Celebrate with dinner and entertainment with the Coast Fiddlers and the Pender Harbour and Gibsons Legion Pipe Bands. Poet’s Hour at 6 p.m., dinner served at 7 p.m. Tickets at the Legion and Harbour Insurance for $35. 

Congratulations to the winners of the Polar Express Christmas Lights competition! Garden Bay winners, decided by 13 judges: Rose and Brian Everett. Madeira Park winners, decided by 23 judges: first - Tanya and Richard Massullo, second - Joy and Grant Ellert, third - Donna Brown, fourth - Virginia Antilla, fifth - Sheila Munro and Darren Morton, sixth - Patti Soos. Thanks to all participants and to John Henry’s and Marina Pharmacy for the prize donations.
