Halfmoon Bay: Be safe in the parks and on the water

Hi everyone! What a week we’ve had on the Sunshine Coast! The weather was spectacular with warm temperatures and sunny skies. A little rain to help our gardens and flowers grow was an added treat.

Hi everyone! What a week we’ve had on the Sunshine Coast! The weather was spectacular with warm temperatures and sunny skies. A little rain to help our gardens and flowers grow was an added treat. This upcoming long weekend shows signs of typical spring weather with a mix of sun, cloud, showers and mild temperatures.

The majority of BC Parks are scheduled to reopen on May 14. This includes front and back country trails, beaches, picnic areas, washroom facilities and boat launches. Visitors are asked to follow the physical distancing guidelines set out by public health officials and visit areas close to your own home. Some facilities and playgrounds will remain closed. We are sure that Smuggler Cove and Sargeant Bay will be popular places to visit this weekend so please be mindful and safe. Go to bcparks.ca/covid-19 for more information. It is suggested that if you are not feeling well or are sick, stay home and visit another time.

The Coast Guard and RCSAR (Search and Rescue) ask that you stay safe on the water. It was noted that there were two people on wave-runners racing along Welcome Passage, Halfmoon Bay, into Sargeant Bay and then towards the Trail Islands. Many ocean-view residents noted that these wave-runner operators were deliberately darting through flocks of birds on the water making them take flight. Please be respectful to ocean life and other craft on the water so that everyone can enjoy our pristine oceans and islets.

The Shari Ulrich concert, hosted by the Halfmoon Bay Community Association, is postponed and will be rescheduled as soon as the Coopers Green Hall is open for events again. If you have a ticket and would like to be reimbursed, Terry Knight will be at Coopers Green Park on Saturday, May 23 from 10 a.m. until noon. If this date and time does not work for you, please contact Terry directly at [email protected].

Also, the association’s new logo contest is in full swing. Electronic submissions are being accepted until May 31 so if you have a creative logo idea, please send it to Terry. Information and guidelines can be found on their website and Facebook pages.

The HMB Community School teachers and staff would like to thank all of the families and community that came out to say hello during their parade on May 8. Wendy White noted, “The signs and spirit that greeted us along the parade route were overwhelming, our hearts are full! A very special thank you to the HMB Fire Dept. and Sechelt RCMP for escorting us along the route and joining in the fun. We really appreciate your participation!”

Did you know?

Spring is a time for migratory birds to visit our beautiful Coast. My absolute favourite is the Swainson’s thrush as their sound is so amazing. Their distinctive, upward-spiraling melody fluting song can be heard near forests and wooded areas. They are more vocal in the mornings and evenings so hopefully you will hear them over the next couple of months while they mate and nest along the Coast.

Have your say at the Bay. Please contact me before 5 p.m. on Mondays at [email protected]

Be kind, be gentle, be safe.
