Elphinstone Chronicles: News from the neighbourhood

It was a packed November meeting of the Elpinstone Community Association. New Area E Director Donna McMahon gave a run-down of the committees of the SCRD and how to find out the agendas. She is now chair of the Infrastructure and the Transportation Committee (standing committees). She talked about advisory committees and asks people interested in serving on advisory committees, particularly the Area E Advisory Planning Commission (APC), to contact her. In reporting on the Suncoaster Trail meeting, Donna mentioned they are looking for input from residents. She spoke about issues with wastewater treatment plants in the region (we have two in Elphinstone) and took many questions. In response to a question about traffic issues and Gospel Rock, she showed the current thinking about the long-term route for the development on her map of our community. To a question about water, her response was that there is a need both for more sources and better storage and she informed us there would be reports coming out in January 2019 regarding the test well drilling and reservoir options – so stay tuned! Donna has set up a website so residents can keep up-to-date: everythingelphinstone.ca.

Residents involved with saving Reed Road Forest expressed grave concern about a recent letter from BC Timber Sales (BCTS) indicating that DL 1313 will be put up for auction to be logged in January 2019. Hermann Ziltener urged people to come to a short rally at the forest site and 55 people showed up! A delegation of concerned citizens spoke to the new SCRD board on Nov. 22 to ask for their support in contacting the relevant ministries to preserve the forest. Director McMahon moved a three-part motion to do just that, which passed unanimously.

Some tasty potluck food was enjoyed at the Elphinstone Social on Saturday, Nov. 24. A good crowd turned up to share a meal, chat and get to know their neighbours, including some new residents who expressed delight at being at the gathering. Naomi Fleschhut was on hand to speak to people at her Resilient Neighbourhoods Conversation Corner to promote building more socially-connected and resilient neighbourhoods. Find out more about the project including resources and micro-grants at www.resilientcoast.ca.

Don’t forget the annual silent auction for the Gibsons Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre this weekend, Friday Nov. 30 and Saturday Dec. 1. Check out the auction items at Sunnycrest Mall and support this important community resource.
