A crash in Maple Ridge has claimed the life of a man and injured another person.

Police officers from Ridge Meadows RCMP responded to a serious collision at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. When officers arrived at Haney Bypass near 277 Street they discovered two vehicles with damage.

Witnesses reported seeing the driver of a Pontiac Sunfire allegedly travelling into the oncoming lane and striking a Honda Civic.

A 39-year-old man from Abbotsford died at the scene and has been identified as the driver of the Pontiac Sunfire by police.

Paramedics transported the driver of the Honda Civic to the hospital with serious, non-life threatening injuries.

Cpl. Julie Klaussner says speed is believed to be a contributing factor in the crash at this time.

A Kia Rio was also damaged in the collision by flying debris. The driver was not injured.

"The Investigational Support Team and the Integrated Reconstruction Analysis Reconstruction Team were called out to assist with the investigation and Haney Bypass between Burnett Street and 227 Street was shut down for several hours after the collision,” says Klaussner.

The investigation is active and ongoing.

Police are looking to speak to witnesses or anyone who has dash camera and security footage of the incident. Call Ridge Meadows RCMP at 604-463-6251.
