A Windsor, Ont. man convicted of killing his mother with a hammer has died in a B.C. prison, corrections officials say.
The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) said May 1 that Damian Hawley died April 29 in Mission Institution. No cause of death was given.
Hawley had been serving an indeterminate sentence for second-degree murder; the sentence started Nov. 16, 2016.
“The inmate’s next of kin have been notified,” the service said.
The prison had been on lockdown for “an exceptional search” April 24-27.
The CSC said it was “heightening measures to prevent contraband from entering its institutions in order to help ensure a safe and secure environment for everyone.”
It is not known if the two incidents are connected.
Hawley pleaded guilty in the 2014 death of Gertrude Hawley. It was his son Michael who found his grandmother, a claw hammer near her head.
She survived 10 days before succumbing to her injuries.
Neighbours described hearing blood-curdling screams.
CSC said, as in all cases involving the death of an inmate, it will review the circumstances.
“CSC policy requires that the police and the coroner be notified,” the service said.
