NORTH VANCOUVER — Crews from three fire departments on Vancouver's North Shore are battling a blaze at an apartment complex that began Saturday morning.

District of North Vancouver spokesman Ryan Schaap says the blaze broke out at the Silverlynn Apartment complex in Lynn Valley and crews continue to battle the flames.

He says the building has suffered "significant damage," but the extent won't be known until it's put out.

He says displaced residents are being sent to a church nearby where North Shore Emergency Management has established a reception centre.

Photos and video footage posted online show the building engulfed in flames, with thick black and grey smoke billowing overhead and visible from far-away parts of Metro Vancouver.

District of North Vancouver Mayor Mike Little says in a Facebook post that the fire at the seniors complex will take hours to put out and a "full accounting" of residents has yet to be completed.
