An 80-year-old man cycling on the Trans-Canada Highway was killed Saturday in a head-on collision with a minivan.
West Shore RCMP said the man was cycling south in the northbound lanes “on the right-hand shoulder” when he collided with a grey Toyota Sienna.
Police, firefighters and paramedics were called to the area just north of the Six Mile Road exit shortly after 5:20 p.m.
Despite life-saving measures, the man succumbed to his injuries. He has not been publicly identified.
The 51-year-old driver and 15-year-old passenger of the van were taken to hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
The cause of the collision is under investigation. Police have ruled out drugs and alcohol as factors.
The northbound lanes were closed for more than four hours while collision reconstructionists examined the scene. The road reopened around 9:40 p.m.
Police are asking anyone who was travelling on the highway between 5 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. and has a dash camera to contact West Shore RCMP at 250-474-2264.
