A 4.8-magnitude earthquake was recorded about 200 kilometers off Vancouver Island’s west coast on Thursday evening, but there were no reports of it being felt, says a Natural Resources Canada earthquake seismologist.
The quake happened about 8:05 p.m. southwest of Port Alice, said Taimi Mulder.
“We get a number of these per year,” she said. “It would have been too small for people to feel it — you usually have to get up to at least a 5.5.”
The quake was measured at a depth of about 10 kilometres, Mulder said.
Two previous 4.8-magnitude earthquakes were recorded about eight hours apart on April 17, 191 kilometres west of Port Alice.
The quakes were north of Thursday’s site, one at 2:46 p.m. and the other at 11:06 p.m. There were no reports of either quake being felt.
