A house fire Monday night in the Hart neighbourhood in the north end of the city claimed the life of a Prince George man.
Prince George Fire Rescue responded to an active monitored alarm at the residence in the 4000 block of Chestnut Drive at about 10:30 p.m. Monday.
The house was showing smoke and flames when fire crews arrived. Firefighters from three halls worked to extinguish the fire for three hours.
PGFR chief Cliff Warner confirmed the victim was found in the house by firefighters, whose attempts at resuscitation were unsuccessful.
Warner said the fire got into the roof of the single-storey house and fire crews were able to save the main structure but hot spots in the roof proved difficult to suppress.
A neighbour confirmed the victim of the fire was an elderly man who lived alone in the house.
The property loss is estimated at $250,000. The cause is currently under investigation.
