City's unemployment rate rises to 4.9 per cent

The city's unemployment rate stood at 4.9 per cent in December, according to a Statistics Canada labour market survey estimate.

The number is up from 4.1 per cent for the same month last year.

As of last month, 52,300 people were employed and 2,700 people were looking for work, compared to 53,500 working and 2,300 seeking employment during the same month last year.

Month-over-month, the unemployment rate stood at 4.2 per cent in November with 52,900 working and 2,300 seeking work.

The December unemployment rate is considered accurate to within plus or minus 1.1 percentage points 68 per cent of the time, while that for December 2021 holds an accuracy of plus or minus 1.4 points and, for November, plus or minus 1.3 points.
