Run for Terry on Sept. 14

Terry Fox Run

The annual Terry Fox Run is set for Sunday, Sept. 14 in Gibsons at the community centre.

Runners, walkers, bikers, skateboarders, strollers, pet walkers, and drive- by folks can begin to show up for the count at 8 a.m. with registration.

The warm-up with Jacquie Allen and official send off will be at 9:15 and 9:30 a.m. respectively.  There will be a water stop and the routes are: one, three, five and 10 km — all avoiding crossing the highway for safety reasons.

There are special reasons to come out and support the event this year, said run organizer Mary Findlay.

“Traditionally the schools of B.C. have adopted Terry Fox as a role model and have benefited from the great school-based education program developed by the Terry Fox Foundation,” she said. “Due to the confusion over the beginning of the school year, I am inviting school kids and parents to come out and take this opportunity to join in on the energy of the community event so the momentum of the spirit of Terry Fox continues for another year in the school-aged population.”

She said another special aspect of this year’s Terry Fox Run is the theme of participating with a particular person in mind.

“A huge poster will be available at the run site and stickies with names of loved ones can be attached as folks gather to ready themselves for the event,” she said. “I cannot think of a person or family that is not affected by cancer. The Terry Fox Foundation collects donations from the event and funds research aimed at discovering the cause of this disease and developing strategies to reduce the devastation that cancer brings to individuals and families.

“This year my walk with Ellie, my dog, will be our 15th together and I am grateful for the cancer treatment progress of two of my brothers and I will be thinking of those I know who died in the last little while leaving us all at a loss.”
