Sunshine Coast Junior Hockey Society is hosting a Charity Classic game between the Vancouver Canucks Alumni Team and the Sunshine Coast All-Stars on Dec. 2.

The match will feature “some of the most popular former Canucks including Dave Babych and Kirk McLean, key members of the 1994 Stanley Cup finalists, against a team of local players known as the Sunshine Coast All-Stars,” SCJHS president Stu Frizzell in a press release.

The weekend will include a pre-game autograph session at the Gibsons and Community Centre, a post-game reception and auction on the Saturday and a Minor Hockey Breakfast with the alumni Sunday.

Tickets are to go on sale soon.

Proceeds will go toward society’s efforts to build a new training facility, dressing rooms and complete arena upgrades ahead of the September 2024 launch of the Coast’s junior hockey team. A naming contest for the team concluded Oct. 17.

“This exciting event we’re hosting on the weekend of December 2 will help build awareness and momentum around a project that could benefit our community for generations,” said Frizzel in the release. “A junior hockey franchise on the lower Sunshine Coast is truly something we can all unite around as a dynamic new feature of our community.”

The last time the Canucks Alumni team visited the Coast was in January 2019, when the Sunshine Coast Minor Hockey Association hosted the former NHLers for the association’s 35th anniversary. In that game, the Canucks beat the Blues 5-2.
