Obituary: Nancy J. Jones

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Nancy Jones (neé Cowan), age 89, of Gibsons, B.C., formerly of North Vancouver, B.C. Nancy passed away peacefully on April 18, 2024 at 4:00 pm in Sechelt Hospital surrounded by family. Nancy was the eldest child of five siblings, a loving wife of 46 years to David, a mother, sister, auntie, grandmother, proud great-grandmother, and a friend to many. She was predeceased by her husband David, sister Marylin, brother Bill, sister-in-law Susan and parents Mary and James Cowan.

She will be dearly missed by her children, Andrew, Gordon, (Foster) Janice, brother Bob (Barb), sister Margaret (Nigel), grandchildren, Taylor, Logan, Jessica, David and great-grandchildren Isabelle and Phaedra.

Also mourned by Allan (Kris), Gordon C., nephews, nieces, extended family and many friends in the Lower Mainland, Sunshine Coast, Saskatchewan and Scotland.

In 1992 Nancy and Dave built a retirement home in Gibsons, B.C. Nancy was a homemaker, seamstress, knitter, quilter, and a great cook best known for her delicious pies and homemade bread. Nancy was an adventurer; hiking the West Coast Trail, Cape Scott and Scottish Highlands. She paddled the Bowron Lakes with brother Bob, paddled outriggers in Gibsons and Maui, played softball in North Vancouver in her seventies. She ran many of Terry Fox runs, Sun Runs, Vancouver Marathons and 24 Hr. relays. She also went into local polar bear plunges on New Year's Day; she even attempted to swim from Gibsons to Keats Island on a windy day, with Dave in a boat by her side. Nancy enjoyed cabin life with friends and family at McLeese Lake, B.C. As an avid gardener she grew many different types of flowers and vegetables in the garden and greenhouse. She also enjoyed music and taught guitar on Vancouver Island. Nancy belonged to Al-Anon family groups in North Vancouver and Gibsons where many friendships were made. Nancy will always be remembered for her sparkling blue eyes, quick wit and joyful laughter. Rest in peace.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Canadian Lung Association of Canada and/or Salvation Army Canada.

A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, May 24 at Devlin Funeral Home, 579 Seaview Road, Gibsons, BC at 2:00 pm.
