It's the Halfmoon Bay school carnival coming up.

The Sargeant Bay Society’s Botany Walk will take place on the Breadner Loop on May 5 (10 a.m.). Roadside parking is available on Truman Road. Rand Rudland, SBS President recommends “sturdy footwear and a walking stick for those so inclined.” (I love that Heather Newman, Pointhouse Suites On Sargeant Bay owner, features SBS news on her website pointhouse.ca/sargeant-bay-news-events-3/. While you’re there, check out her spectacular holiday rental accommodation! See that painting hanging above the fireplace? That’s the work of talented local artist Joelly Cright, joellycright.com.)

The annual Parent Advisory Council Halfmoon Bay Elementary School Carnival is in town on May 9, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. It’s a Comic Con superhero theme so don your capes and face masks and join the fun. The fundraiser includes a cake walk, bingo, games, bouncy castle, silent auction and for the first time…drum roll please…the highlight of the event will be a dunk tank with principal Glen Smith as the first contestant, followed by Fire Chief Ryan Daley and a host of other HMB “personalities.” The fire department will be running their popular BBQ and local Pizza King, Reggie, will be serving up his culinary specialties. For your sugar fix, e.b.’s Ice Cream has got you covered! All Sunshine Coast families are welcome! I’ll be at the entrance selling tickets. More volunteers are needed! Please email [email protected]

Karyn Henwood of the Halfmoon Bay Branch of the Sunshine Coast Healthcare Auxiliary shares this news: “On May 11, we’re holding our annual spring baking, plant and crafts sale at the Trail Bay Mall 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Don’t miss this opportunity to support health care on the Coast! At our monthly meeting on May 13, 10 a.m., Jackie Scott from Sunshine Coast Hospice will be presenting an overview of the Green Sleeve program, a proactive way of making sure that your vital medical information and personal wishes are available in emergency situations.

Chris Hergesheimer, lead food programmer for the Sunshine Coast Community Services Society, will tell anyone that cares to listen that our food banks are in dire straits! In a recent Coast Reporter article, he states that families are struggling to put food on their tables and food banks are scrambling to meet the demand. This May, the four food banks of the Sunshine Coast are “coming together and asking for your help with donations” of food and cash. Donations to the Sechelt Food Bank (which serves Halfmoon Bay) are accepted on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Contact Chris at [email protected] for more information about food security.  Can’t get to the Sechelt location? Starting on May 31, at the Area B director’s last Saturday of the month “coffee and conversations,” bring your food and cash donations and volunteers will ensure that they are delivered.

Any local vendors want to be part of the Marketplace at the HBCA’s July 14  fair?  Email me at [email protected]. Hurry, booths are being snapped up fast!
